BRICK — A Brick man who had four pounds of heroin in his trunk was arrested in Virginia earlier this month, authorities there said this morning.

Steve Carrington Durham, Jr., 28, was arrested May 8 but the Stafford County Sheriff's Office didn't announce the arrest until today.

Authorities in Stafford, Va. got wind of a large shipment of heroin scheduled to pass through the area and uncovered the drugs with the help of a K-9 unit. The heroin has an approximate street value of $270,000.

Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar.

The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy.

With emergency repairs to state and local infrastructure damaged by the storm now complete, work has started on the state's long term recovery, said Bob Martin, commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Barnegat DOVE Collecting Items for Oklahoma Victims

Officials with the Barnegat Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) are accepting donations for tornado victims in Oklahoma, according to their Facebook page.

Officials are accepting emergency supplies at their location at the Gunning River Mall.

The organization was formed by former Barnegat Township Committeman Jeff Melchiondo and his family and friends after Sandy passed through New Jersey.

The distribution center will be open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. for drop off.

A list below will give you suggestions on what is needed. Trucks will be leaving shortly so we will need supplies by Friday evening for the first round, according to the website.
