Friday, January 20, 2012 – 3:00pm

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for southern and central New Jersey for late Friday night into Saturday morning. This advisory includes the Barnegat Township area. The advisory has been issued as a result of a developing storm in the Mississippi River Valley that will track over the Mid-Atlantic coast and intensify as it moves out to sea over the weekend. This storm will bring a wintry mix of precipitation to the area on Saturday, especially during the early morning hours.

Forecasts are calling for snow to start during the overnight hours and quickly change over to sleet, freezing rain and then eventually just plain rain. Snowfall accumulation can be upwards to an inch prior to the change over to a wintry mix and rain. Driving conditions Saturday morning could be slippery and motorists should exercise caution during the early morning hours.

Any precipitation that falls during the late morning and afternoon hours on Saturday should be in the form of plain rain, as temperatures will be around 40 degrees. Temperatures will fall below freezing on Saturday night, so any moisture remaining on the roads will freeze and once again cause slippery driving conditions.

Township snow crews are prepared to respond to the winter weather. At this time, the Township anticipates this storm to be mainly a salting event. The Township will have a measured response to the event and take the necessary steps to maintain acceptable road conditions.

Again, a minor winter weather event will impact Barnegat during the overnight hours into Saturday morning. Up to an inch of snow could accumulate before a change over to sleet, freezing rain and just plain rain. Road conditions overnight could be slippery prior to the switch over to rain. Also, road conditions could be icy Saturday night as any remaining roadway moisture freezes as temperatures fall below freezing.
